Take a camera

Take a camera with you rather than just relying on your cellphone. Cell phone cameras can often be too slow to catch a snatched shot. You will also not be able to use the phone on your camera during take-off and landing. Depending on the airline and country you are visiting you may not be permitted to put your phone on during the flight.

Don’t take a camera, it is one more thing to get lost. If your friends don’t believe you were there – change you friends. For pictures buy postcards, they are always better than you photos

Postcards are a good idea. I give them to family and friends. What they find special is not what is depicted on the card, it is that I brought them something from a faraway place.

The majority of postcards are, with all due respect to the previous commenter, not all that compelling. In my view, if you have a good eye for photography, you should take a camera. You’ll probably come back with stunning pictures.

Monster makes a nice point, and it can be extended: when you travel people often ask you ‘Where do come from?’ So take postcards from your hometown like Spot, Texas or the deepest Africa, Cape Town, and show them. Postcards make a great conversation point on the road. I know a B&B in Dublin, Ireland where the whole parlor is full of picture postcards from guests all over the world and the landlady is very proud of them.
The emphasis must be on ‘good’ eye for photography. Most tourist come back with a photo terabyte of unfocused Eiffel Tower and fuzzy Taj Mahal. Postcards also very seldom have distracting people in them, or are taken from a vantage point a normal traveler can not reach easily, like a shot from a helicopter.
